Ingredients of Ethakka Appam / Banana Fritters

  1. It's of plantains or bananas.
  2. It's of plain flour.
  3. Prepare of rice flour.
  4. It's of powdered sugar.
  5. You need of cardamom powder.
  6. Prepare of salt.
  7. You need of turmeric.
  8. Prepare of baking powder.
  9. Prepare of water.
  10. You need of Oil to fry.

One of my all-time, favorite South Indian snacks is ethakka appam. Yeah, Ethakka appam is commonly known as Pazham Pori. But we call it as Ethakka Appam at home, I guess it's known like that in Kottayam side. I made banana fritters yesterday night also.

Ethakka Appam / Banana Fritters step by step

  1. Mix plain flour, rice flour, powdered sugar, cardamom powder, salt, turmeric and baking powder in a bowl. Now add water as required and make a thick batter which can be coated on the banana pieces nicely..
  2. Peel bananas and cut one banana into 4 pieces..
  3. Heat oil in a pan. When the oil is hot at the banana pieces into the batter and fry it until golden in colour. Prepare all the pieces in the same way..
  4. Solve it hot with tea or coffee..

I have to have some thing sweet after dinner. Did not have anything else to satisfy my cravings except a banana. Pazham pori, ethakka appam, banana fritters, whatever it is called holds a special place in the cuisine of Kerala. It's a quintessential Malayali snack and you get The bananas used for Ethakka Appam is Ethappazham (the raw version of which, Ethakka, is used to make the famous Kerala banana chips!).
